Melitta - Coffee Cone

  • Introduction

Coffee cones are a fast and easy way to brew an excellent cup of coffee. For perfect preparation you will need: 1 coffee cone, filters, Fresh Coffee, Grinder (pref. Burr Grinder), and hot water. Mug of choice.

  • Step 1: Grind your Coffee

Using fresh ground coffee is your first step to a perfect cup of coffee. Try to get your hands on a quality burr (rather than blade) grinder. Using a burr grinder will ensure uniform ground coffee with consistency. When grinding your coffee for a melitta it is important to use a medium/coarse grind. If coffee is to fine it will not penetrate through filter; to course and coffee will under extract.

  • Step 2:
    Insert Paper Filter and Flush

Place melitta on top of a coffee mug, than place a paper filter into melitta cone. Pour approximately 1 cup of hot water into filter to rinse out any residual paper flavor. This step also helps to preheat the porcelain cone and your cup. Once water drains through completely pour waste water out of the mug and wipe dry.

  • Step 3: Add Coffee to Pot

Make sure filter is snuggly sealed against the melitta, smooth out any raised areas. For one 8oz coffee mug we suggest using 21grams of freshly ground coffee (about three tablespoons).

  • Step 4: First Water Infusion

You should use about 10 ounces of water for an 8oz cup of coffee. Bring water to a boil. Once boiling remove from heat and set aside for 30 seconds, perfect brewing temp is 202 degrees; once ready slowly pour just enough water to saturate the grinds evenly; causing water to slowly drip into your cup. When using fresh coffee you will notice a blooming affect in the coffee. This expansion occurs as CO2 gasses release from the coffee shortly after adding water.

  • Step 5: Pour Some More

About 10-15 seconds after the completion of step 3 you will notice the coffee bloom crack. At this time add more water using a spiral pattern. Do not over fill filter. Your goal is to keep the water level 1 inch below the rim of the cone. Stop pouring if water level gets to high.

  • Step 6: Repeat Step 5

If necessary repeat step 5 until you have poured a total of 10oz. of water. Make sure to submerge dry coffee by pouring along the rim.

  • Step 7: Remove Filter

Once extraction has finished remove cone from mug.

  • Step 8:
    An Awesome Cup of Coffee

    Enjoy!!!
